Wind energy: generating public support

client:British Wind Energy Association (BWEA)
project dates:2004 - 2005

In 2004 BWEA, the professional body for the UK wind industry, appointed Forster to challenge damaging myths about wind farms and to mobilise public opinion in favour of wind.

Our strategy focused on giving a voice to the silent majority of people who support wind energy, and on turning wind turbines into a modern British icon.

We created the campaign Embrace the Revolution and launched Wind Weekends , which continue as a popular events enabling the public to visit wind farms and show their support.

Project outcomes

  • During the campaign, public acceptance that wind farms are necessary to meet future energy needs rose by 6%.  In 2008,  three quarters of the UK population agree with this.
  • The campaign was endorsed by over 20,000 signatories in the first year
  • 2008 saw 20 wind farms open their gate for Wind Weekend, the biggest event yet
